Thomas Jefferson was America s first Secretary of State however during his time as Secretary of State his office was on Market Street in Phliadelphia near Penn s Landing.  During the George Washington s adminstration where the Capital City was in New York City the Department of Foreign Affiars was renting office space at a Tavern Bar Inn once owned by a Frenchman.

The Secretary of State Builiding in Washington District of Columbia was not built until the 1940 s and up until the 1950 s the neighborhood referred to as Foggy Bottom was an industrial neighborhood known more for it s smog and criminal activity than housing the Department of State.

The Jefferson Memorial is ofcourse not located in the Foggy Bottom neighborhood but is along the Tidal Basin on the banks of the Potomac river.  I just happened to first see the Jefferson Memorial when it was covered in Fog.

Having grown up in the Bay Area of California I know that Fog can lift rather quickly and you can get a great photograph if you are pateint.  I waited about 15 minutes and the fog began to lift.  As you can see in the photograph the fog had not lifted completely and the bottom of the Washington Monument is still covered in a layer of low lying fog.  The misty quality of this photograph is want I find most interesting.

It was a hell of a morning when I arrived in the District of Columbia the day after St. Patrick s Day 2022.
