The Public art in SF is a little like finding historical clues that help us Californians learn more about our towns and history.
This arrow is just north of the SF Bay Bridge near where an old freeway used to be which was destroyed by the 1989 earthquake. I view it as Cupid’s arrow marking the City as the city of love.
Recently another public art display was introduced to the city which is a 92 foot sculpture of Venus the Greek goddess of Love and mother to Cupid. The sculpture is on Mission around the corner from UN Plaza in the courtyard of an apartment complex.
The great seal of the Golden State features the Roman name for Athena, Minerva who is also the goddess of wisdom and the word “Eureka” meaning “I found It!!” which is what gold miners used to scream when they searched for the motherload.
In reality few gold miners got rich off gold, the miners did make other people rich who sold goods and services to the miners. Most everybody fell in love with the geology and beauty of the Golden state.
I made this a mousepad because computers have arrows on the screen controlled by the mouse. The only way this could be more California is if it had Mickey Mouse on it.
